Indonesian palimanan sandstone wall cladding on a resort exterior wall
Sedimentary sandstone

Indonesian Sandstone

Warm buff sandstone, best known internationally as Palimanan. A naturally textured, matte stone used widely across tropical resort and villa architecture for walls, screens and shaded paving.

Even, sand-toned stone with a naturally textured surface.

Indonesian sandstone — Palimanan being the best-known variety — is a warm, evenly grained sedimentary stone from West Java. Its appeal is textural: even honed, it retains a soft matte surface that reads very differently from polished stone under natural light.

It is a mainstay of resort architecture across Southeast Asia, used for boundary walls, entry features, carved screens and shaded terraces. Like limestone it carves well, and it takes the same ornamental treatments.

For exposed exterior use in high-rainfall climates we recommend sealing and, where the wall is permanently shaded and damp, a periodic clean. In dry markets it needs essentially no maintenance.

Questions

Indonesian Sandstone — FAQ

They behave similarly. Sandstone is generally slightly harder and reads a touch warmer and more textured; limestone is finer and better for detailed carving. Both are for interior and shaded exterior positions rather than submerged use.
