
How to Calculate Natural Stone Quantity for Your Project
Ordering short means a second freight cost on a small quantity and a batch that may not match. Here is how to take off stone quantities properly, application by application.
Under-ordering natural stone is expensive in a way that under-ordering most materials is not. You pay a second freight cost on a small quantity, you wait for the lead time again, and the replacement material comes from a different block and may not match. The take-off is worth doing carefully.
Waste allowances

Attic stock is separate from waste, not part of it. Waste gets consumed during installation; attic stock is what you hold for the panel someone drives a forklift into three years from now.
Mosaic panels
Standard 300 × 300 mm module gives approximately 11 panels per square metre. So:
- Panels required = area (m²) × 11 × 1.10
- A 40 m² feature wall = 40 × 11 × 1.10 = 484 panels.
Confirm whether the supplier's stated module includes the joint. A "300 × 300" panel that is 300 mm of stone plus joints covers slightly more area than one that is 300 mm overall — over 500 panels that difference is a square metre or two.
Swimming pools
A pool take-off has four parts and people forget three of them.
- Floor area. For a sloping floor use the sloped length, not the plan length.
- Wall area. Perimeter × average depth, adjusted for the slope.
- Steps, benches and shelves. Tread and riser faces both count.
- Coping. Pool perimeter in linear metres, plus corner pieces counted individually.
Add 10% for a rectangular pool and 15–20% for a freeform one. Then add any spa, plunge pool or water feature intended to match — to the same order, so it comes from the same batch.
Wall cladding and corners
Field area is straightforward: elevation area minus openings, plus 10%. The item that gets missed is corners.
Mitred L-corner pieces are quantified by linear metre of external corner, counted separately from the field area, and they are not a small cost. A building with eight external corners at 3 m high needs 24 linear metres of corner pieces, and if they are not on the order the installation stops.
Paving
Area plus 10%, or 15% with many cut-ins for planters, drainage or lighting. For patterned laying — herringbone, basket weave, diagonal — use 15%. For crazy paving supplied loose, use 15% and expect to cut on site.
Pebble by weight
Loose pebble is sold by weight, not area:
- Approximately 1 tonne covers 10–12 m² at 50 mm depth.
- Formula: tonnes = area (m²) × depth (m) × 1.6 (approximate bulk density in t/m³).
- A 60 m² bed at 50 mm depth = 60 × 0.05 × 1.6 = 4.8 tonnes.
Round up to whole bulk bags, and remember a 20ft container holds roughly 25 tonnes — check against the destination port's road-legal weight limit before finalising.
Do not forget grout
Grout is not usually the supplier's problem, which is exactly why it gets under-ordered. Pebble mosaic takes roughly two to three times the grout of flat tile because of the joint volume between rounded stones. Small-module mosaic takes considerably more than large-format tile. Calculate it from joint width, depth and linear metres of joint, or ask your grout manufacturer for their coverage figure for the specific module.
